Costa Rica - The Hawaii of Latin-American Surfing

costa_ricaAs two coasts, the Caribbean and the Pacific, combined, amount a long-drawn-out seaboard of more than 1100 km and thousands of breaks too, Costa Rica – the province blessed with these, is aptly called the surfers’ heaven. The pristine beaches with just the right temperature of 80° F, let grommet enjoy treasured rides without their wetsuits and make it a perfect surfers’ hangout destination.

Located between Panama and Nicaragua, Costa Rica has good air-connectivity from different parts of the United States of America. It started to be known as a famous surfing destination, especially after across-the-board debut in Endless Summer 2.

The point breaks, river-mouth breaks, beach breaks and wonderful lefts and rights that are found here, collectively make Costa Rica a world-class and one of the most admirable surfing destinations. This tiny country has seemingly endless coast with year round consistent waves and sometimes swells. The size of waves ranges from waist to chest, 2 feet to 4 feet.

What makes Costa Rica a surfing paradise is its two coasts that offer great breaks, literally all year round. When one ocean is still, it has another full of zip one on the other side of the country. The Caribbean coast has some breaks during January which do not last till July but the Southern Pacific coast bestows some excellent break points during July. It shows how affluent Costa Rica is.

The Guanacaste-Nicoya and Punta Arenas are some of the legendary surfing spots on Pacific coast which are worth visiting during the rainy season (May to November). Some others on the Caribbean coast including Tamarindo (one of world’s best learn-to-surf waves), Puerto Viejo and Jaco are best to surf during the summer season (mid December to April). However, the major swell term begins in April and lasts till October.

Costa Rica features a rich surfing culture with surf shops and board rentals accessible here. It also houses good amount and quality of hotels, restaurants and bars which attest the fine hospitality you are likely to enjoy there.

So hit the road, get ready with a surfboard, wear a leash and ride on the heavenly waves.
