If you want to go fast then it is better to get a flatter board as the board with more rocker has a tendency to push through the waves rather than glide over it. Another thing you need to know is about sand finished and gloss finished boards. People generally used to feel that gloss finished would glide through the water and make for speedier surfing, but studies have concluded that sand finished boards are faster. As the sand finish holds the layer of water that flows over it and this layer of water is what glides over the waves producing the least resistance. There is however something that has come into the market called “extreme cream”, which is a polymer that can be applied to the glossy boards to make the board even faster that the sand finished boards. Another tip for you to remember is that try your best to get a quad fin. With the usual tri-fin, the large back fin causes drag. The shaper is so designed that it directs the water to flow out through the back of the board. With a quad fin you will lessen the drag on your board. The tri-fin may give you good directional control but the quad will give you the same with better speed. Also with the fins it must be remembered that the fins which have a greater sweep, which is the degree to which the fins curve towards the base, these boards will be faster and more stable but you will be compromising on turning ability. Similarly, the fins which are rigid will also give you speed but do not take a fin which is too rigid as it will hamper your turning ability. It is also important that you keep the bottom of your board clean from wax, dirt and salt. You can do this by using an old credit card with a hair dryer or if you are on the beach you can rub some hot sand on the board. |

They say if you have it, then you ought to flaunt it. So for all your surfing champions who are looking not only for the big waves but also for the competitions, then here is a list for you to ponder on when you sit on your board waiting to catch a wave.
